## Key facts

- Tasmanian oak is a trade name for three eucalypts – mountain ash, alpine ash and messmate – not a true oak.
- Janka hardness: Tasmanian oak about 5.5–7 kN; European oak about 4.2–6.1 kN – the ranges overlap.
- Victoria ended native timber harvesting on 1 January 2024, removing a major source of the same species sold as Victorian ash.
- European oak is the usual timber for herringbone and chevron parquet in Australia.
- Timbo supplies Prime grade European solid oak parquet, 18mm, through trade partners.

## Quick answer

**Choose Tasmanian oak** if you want an Australian-grown, pale, budget-friendly hardwood in straight boards that stains well. **Choose European oak** if you want true oak's grain and ray fleck, a wider range of finishes (including smoked and white-wash), or a herringbone or chevron pattern. Their hardness is similar; the real differences are grain character, formats and supply.

**Tasmanian oak** is a trade name for three eucalypts – *Eucalyptus regnans* (mountain ash), *E. delegatensis* (alpine ash) and *E. obliqua* (messmate) – grown in Tasmania and, historically, Victoria. **European oak** (*Quercus robur* and *Q. petraea*) is a true oak grown across Europe.

## European oak vs Tasmanian oak at a glance

| | European oak | Tasmanian oak |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | True oak (*Quercus*) | Three eucalypt species |
| Origin | Europe | Tasmania (and Victoria, sold as Victorian ash) |
| Janka hardness | about 4.2–6.1 kN | about 5.5–7 kN |
| Colour | Honey, straw, light brown | Pale straw to light reddish brown |
| Grain | Straight, with distinctive ray fleck | Straight, with gum veins |
| Staining | Excellent; also smoked and white finishes | Good; stains evenly |
| Common formats | Boards, herringbone, chevron | Straight boards |
| Grading | European grades (e.g. Prime) | AS 2796 |

## Look

Both are pale and calm, but the grain is different. European oak has open grain and silvery ray fleck – flashes of figure that show especially in quarter-sawn timber and give oak its unmistakable texture. Tasmanian oak is finer and more uniform, with occasional gum veins, and is pinker or more straw-coloured. With stain, oak's grain stays visible and textured; Tasmanian oak takes on a smoother, more even colour. See our [oak flooring trends](https://timbo.com.au/guides/oak-flooring-trends-2026) for current finish choices.

## Hardness and durability

The two are close. Tasmanian oak rates about **5.5–7 kN** on the Janka scale and European oak about **4.2–6.1 kN** ([PFC](https://www.pfc.com.au/janka-rating-floor-durability/), [Flooring Expert](https://www.flooringexpert.com.au/european-oak-vs-australian-hardwood/)). Both sit at the softer end of common flooring timbers – well below spotted gum (about 11 kN) – so both benefit from a durable finish, felt pads and entry mats. See the [Janka hardness chart](https://timbo.com.au/compare/janka-hardness-chart).

## Stability

Both are stable flooring timbers when dried and acclimatised properly. Australian-made boards are typically supplied at 10–12% moisture content ([ATFA](https://www.atfa.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/ATFA-Specification-for-Solid-Timber-Flooring-FINAL-Oct-18-.pdf)), and any timber floor should be installed within about ±2% of its expected in-service moisture content ([WoodSolutions](https://www.woodsolutions.com.au/timber-wiki/moisture-guide)). Imported oak should be acclimatised on site – see [acclimatising oak flooring](https://timbo.com.au/guides/acclimatising-oak-flooring) and [moisture content in timber flooring](https://timbo.com.au/guides/moisture-content-timber-flooring).

## Cost

Tasmanian oak straight boards are usually among the more affordable solid hardwoods; oak parquet costs more to install. The research we rely on doesn't give a separate Tasmanian oak price, so the closest benchmark is the general solid Australian hardwood range:

| Item | Typical range (incl. GST) | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Solid Australian hardwood, supply | $55–$130/m² | [D&G](https://dgfloors.com/spotted-gum-flooring/), [HH Timber](https://hhtimberfloors.com.au/guides/timber-flooring-cost-sydney/) |
| Solid Australian hardwood, installed | $120–$367/m² by city | [HH Timber](https://hhtimberfloors.com.au/guides/timber-flooring-cost-sydney/) |
| Raw solid French oak herringbone, supply | $94.99/m² retail | [SET Timber Supplies](https://setimbersupplies.com.au/product/raw-herringbone-french-oak-710x126x18mm/) |
| Herringbone labour only | $60–$100/m²; $90–$120+/m² complex | [The Flooring Guys](https://theflooringguys.com.au/herringbone-flooring-cost-in-australia-2023-a-comprehensive-guide/) |
| Sanding and coating | $30–$70/m² | [WhatsTheDamage](https://whatsthedamage.com.au/flooring-cost-brisbane/timber-floor-sanding-cost/) |

## Installation

Tasmanian oak strip floors are commonly nailed to joists or battens or glued to slab and ply. European oak parquet is glued to a flat, dry slab or ply substrate; on slab, expect flatness within about 3mm over 3m and a moisture barrier or moisture-barrier adhesive system ([Bowens](https://bowens.com.au/blog/hardwood-timber-flooring)). See [installing parquet over a concrete slab](https://timbo.com.au/guides/installing-parquet-over-concrete-slab).

## Maintenance

Maintenance is the same: sweep, damp-mop with a timber-safe cleaner, protect from grit and furniture legs, and recoat before the finish wears through. Both sand well.

## Sustainability and supply

Supply is where the two have diverged. Victoria ended native timber harvesting on 1 January 2024 ([DEECA](https://www.deeca.vic.gov.au/forestry/forestry-in-victoria/commercial-timber-production-from-public-forests)), cutting a major source of these species sold as Victorian ash; Tasmanian-grown supply continues. European oak is imported, so it depends on import due diligence – Australian importers must run a due-diligence system under the Illegal Logging Prohibition Act ([DAFF](https://www.agriculture.gov.au/agriculture-land/forestry/policies/illegal-logging)). Ask for FSC or PEFC certification where required; for Timbo's documentation, ask Timbo.

## Suitability by room and climate

| Situation | Better fit |
| --- | --- |
| Budget straight-board floor, stained | Tasmanian oak |
| Herringbone or chevron | European oak |
| Smoked, white-wash or textured stained look | European oak |
| Raised timber floor over joists | Either, as boards |
| Local supply chain preferred | Tasmanian oak |

## Which should you choose?

- **You want true oak character or a pattern floor:** European oak.
- **You want an Australian-grown, pale straight board at a lower cost:** Tasmanian oak.
- **You plan a custom stain colour:** either – test both on samples with your chosen stain.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Tasmanian oak a real oak?

No. Tasmanian oak is a trade name for timber from three eucalypt species – mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans), alpine ash (E. delegatensis) and messmate (E. obliqua). Early settlers named it 'oak' for its appearance. European oak is a true oak of the genus Quercus.

### Is Tasmanian oak harder than European oak?

Slightly, on average. Published figures put Tasmanian oak at about 5.5–7 kN on the Janka scale and European oak at about 4.2–6.1 kN. The ranges overlap, so in daily use they perform similarly and both rely on a good finish.

### Which takes stain better, Tasmanian oak or European oak?

Both stain well, which is one reason they're compared. European oak also suits smoked (fumed) and white-wash finishes, and its open grain and ray fleck give stained floors a textured look. Tasmanian oak stains evenly but can show gum veins.

### What's the difference between Tasmanian oak and Victorian ash?

They are the same group of species; the name usually reflects where the timber was grown. Victoria's native timber harvest ended in January 2024, so 'Victorian ash' from that source is now limited.

### Can I get Tasmanian oak in herringbone?

Some suppliers make it, but herringbone and chevron parquet in Australia are much more commonly European oak. Ask your flooring retailer what's available.
