## Key facts

- Hybrid / SPC flooring typically costs about $55–$120/m² installed in Australia.
- Solid oak can be sanded and recoated many times; hybrid flooring cannot be sanded and is replaced when worn.
- Sanding and coating a timber floor typically costs $30–$70/m².
- Hybrid's rigid core is water-resistant; solid timber needs spills wiped up and is not suited to wet areas.
- Raw solid French oak herringbone (18mm) is listed by Melbourne retailers at $94.99/m² incl. GST, before installation.

## Quick answer

**Choose hybrid** if your priorities are low upfront cost, water resistance in kitchens and laundries, and a quick, floating installation – and you accept that it will be replaced, not renewed, when it wears. **Choose solid oak** if you want real timber, a solid feel underfoot and a floor that can be sanded and refinished for decades. Hybrid wins on upfront price and water; solid oak wins on longevity, feel and repairability.

**Hybrid flooring** is a click-together plank with a rigid core – often SPC (stone plastic composite) – a printed décor layer that imitates timber, and a clear wear layer on top, usually floated over an underlay. **Solid oak flooring** is real oak through its full thickness; Timbo's parquet is 18mm solid European oak.

## Solid oak vs hybrid at a glance

| | Solid oak (18mm parquet) | Hybrid / SPC |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | Real oak, full thickness | Rigid core + printed image + wear layer |
| Installed cost | Supply about $94.99/m² + labour $60–$120/m² + sanding/coating | About $55–$120/m² installed |
| Can it be sanded? | Yes, many times | No |
| End of life | Sand and recoat | Replace |
| Water | Wipe spills promptly; not for wet areas | Water-resistant core |
| Feel and sound | Solid, warm, quiet (glued down) | Firmer, can sound hollow (floating) |
| Scratches | Visible over time; can be sanded out | Wear layer resists scratches; deep damage means replacement |
| Repairs | Individual blocks can be replaced or spot-sanded | Replace planks |
| Material | Natural timber | Mainly plastics and mineral filler |

## Look

Real oak has depth that a print can't fully reproduce. In solid oak, every block is different, the grain catches light as you move, and the edges and surface are real timber. Good hybrid prints are convincing from a standing distance, but patterns repeat, and herringbone in hybrid is usually a printed plank or click format rather than true blocks. If the look of real timber is the point, choose timber.

## Durability and hardness

Hybrid resists surface wear well; solid oak lasts longer because it can be renewed. A hybrid's wear layer handles scratches, pets and spills, but once it's worn or gouged there is nothing underneath to restore. European oak is a moderate hardwood – about **4.2–6.1 kN** on the Janka scale ([PFC](https://www.pfc.com.au/janka-rating-floor-durability/)) – so it will pick up marks, but sanding and recoating (typically **$30–$70/m²** ([WhatsTheDamage](https://whatsthedamage.com.au/flooring-cost-brisbane/timber-floor-sanding-cost/))) brings it back to new. See [sanding and finishing oak](https://timbo.com.au/guides/sanding-and-finishing-oak).

## Lifetime cost: how to compare

Upfront, hybrid is cheaper. Over the life of a home, the comparison depends on how often the hybrid gets replaced versus how often the oak gets re-sanded. The numbers below are cited ranges; the method is what matters.

| Cost event | Solid oak herringbone | Hybrid |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Initial supply | about $94.99/m² (raw, retail) ([SET Timber](https://setimbersupplies.com.au/product/raw-herringbone-french-oak-710x126x18mm/)) | included below |
| Initial installation | $60–$100/m², up to $120+/m² complex ([The Flooring Guys](https://theflooringguys.com.au/herringbone-flooring-cost-in-australia-2023-a-comprehensive-guide/)) | $55–$120/m² installed ([WhatsTheDamage](https://whatsthedamage.com.au/flooring-cost/)) |
| Initial sand and coat (raw blocks) | $30–$70/m² | – |
| Each renewal | Sand and recoat, $30–$70/m² | Remove and replace, $55–$120/m² plus removal and disposal |

**How to use it:** add the initial cost, then add one renewal cost for every time you expect to refresh the floor while you own the home. A floor that will be renewed several times narrows – and can close – the gap, because each oak renewal is a resurface rather than a new floor. Prices are indicative, incl. GST. ## Feel and sound underfoot

Glued-down solid parquet feels solid and quiet; floating hybrid feels firmer and can sound hollow. Because hybrid floats over an underlay, footsteps can produce a "click" or drum sound, especially with hard shoes. Quality underlays reduce this. A glued solid oak floor has no air gap, so it sounds and feels like part of the building. In apartments, check strata by-laws and acoustic requirements for any hard floor – timber or hybrid.

## Water and stability

Hybrid wins on water. Its rigid core doesn't swell like timber, so it suits laundries and rental kitchens where spills sit around. Solid timber absorbs moisture and moves with humidity – at 25°C, timber equilibrium moisture content is about 11% at 60% relative humidity and 16% at 80% ([ATFA](https://www.floorchoices.com.au/information-sheets/acclimatisation-of-timber-flooring/)) – so oak floors need spills wiped up promptly and are not for bathrooms. In kitchens, sealed oak works well with sensible care; see [oak flooring in kitchens](https://timbo.com.au/guides/oak-flooring-kitchens).

## Installation

Hybrid is faster and simpler; solid parquet is skilled trade work. Hybrid clicks together over an underlay on a flat subfloor. Solid oak parquet is glued to a flat, dry slab or ply substrate with a moisture barrier or moisture-barrier adhesive ([Bowens](https://bowens.com.au/blog/hardwood-timber-flooring)), and raw blocks are then sanded and coated on site.

## Maintenance

Both are easy to clean day to day. Hybrid tolerates wet mopping; oak needs a damp (not wet) mop and a timber-safe cleaner. The big difference is long-term: oak can be refinished to a new colour or sheen, hybrid cannot. See [oak floor care and maintenance](https://timbo.com.au/guides/oak-floor-care-maintenance).

## Sustainability and provenance

Solid oak is a natural, renewable material with a long service life; hybrid is mostly plastic and mineral filler and is replaced at end of life. Hybrid has advantages in some settings – it uses no hardwood, and its durability under water can avoid early replacement in wet-prone spaces. For timber, ask for legal-harvest documentation and FSC or PEFC certificates where required ([DAFF](https://www.agriculture.gov.au/agriculture-land/forestry/policies/illegal-logging)).

## Which should you choose?

- **Rental property, laundry or budget-first renovation:** hybrid.
- **Kids and pets with frequent spills, low maintenance above all:** hybrid, or oak with a hard-wearing finish if you want real timber – see [timber floors and pets](https://timbo.com.au/guides/timber-floors-and-pets).
- **Forever home, period home or a feature herringbone floor:** solid oak.
- **Mixed home:** hybrid in the laundry and solid oak in living areas is a common, sensible split.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is hybrid flooring cheaper than solid oak?

Upfront, yes. Hybrid is typically about $55–$120/m² installed, while solid oak herringbone supply alone is around $95/m² at retail before labour, sanding and coating. Over a long time frame the gap narrows, because solid oak can be sanded and recoated instead of replaced.

### Can hybrid flooring be sanded?

No. Hybrid flooring has a thin printed layer under a clear wear layer. Once that wears through or is badly damaged, the planks must be replaced. Solid oak can be sanded back to fresh timber and recoated many times.

### Is hybrid flooring waterproof?

The core is water-resistant, so hybrid handles spills and wet mopping better than timber. Water can still get under the floor through joints, edges and penetrations, so it is not a substitute for proper waterproofing in wet areas.

### Does hybrid flooring sound hollow?

Floating floors, including hybrid, can sound more 'clicky' or hollow underfoot than a glued-down timber floor. A good underlay helps. Glued-down solid parquet feels and sounds solid.

### Does hybrid flooring add as much value as real timber?

There is no reliable data on resale value by floor type, so be wary of anyone quoting figures. Real timber is generally perceived as a premium material, and it can be refinished to suit a new owner.

### Which is better with pets, hybrid or solid oak?

Hybrid's wear layer resists scratches and accidents well and is easy to clean. Solid oak will show claw marks over time, but those can be sanded out. See our guide to timber floors and pets.
