## Wood flooring in New Zealand: the basics

**Wood flooring in New Zealand means a floor with a real timber walking surface – solid boards, engineered boards or parquet.** The products are the same as in Australia, but the building stock, the regulations and the vocabulary differ, and those differences change what you should buy.

| | Australia | New Zealand |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Everyday term | Floorboards, timber flooring | Wood flooring, timber flooring |
| Patterned floors | Parquetry, parquet | Parquet |
| Building rules | NCC / BCA, Australian Standards | NZ Building Code, building consent, NZS 3604 |
| Technical guidance | ATFA, WoodSolutions | BRANZ |
| GST | 10% | 15% |
| Prices quoted in | AUD | NZD |

New Zealand building is growing again: **41,268** new homes were consented in the year to August 2026, up 21%, with **17,097** in Auckland in the year to June ([Stats NZ](https://www.stats.govt.nz/news/annual-number-of-home-consents-up-21-percent/)). Most of those homes will have a slab under the floor.

## Concrete slabs: the defining NZ issue

**About 92% of new New Zealand houses are built on concrete slabs** ([ArchiPro NZ, citing BRANZ](https://archipro.com.au/article/pros-cons-solid-wood-vs-engineered-wood-flooring-the-wooden-floor-company)), so most new wood floors are glued or floated over concrete. The slab's moisture content is the single biggest risk to a timber floor.

- **How dry?** BRANZ guidance for solid timber flooring on a slab is a relative humidity of **75% or less** at the slab surface ([BRANZ BU644](https://www.branz.co.nz/documents/4063/BU644_Solid_timber_strip_flooring_on_a_concrete_slab.pdf)).
- **How long?** A 100mm slab can take **four months or more** to dry ([PlaceMakers](https://underconstruction.placemakers.co.nz/live-let-dry/)) – often longer than a building programme allows.
- **What helps?** Testing slab moisture rather than guessing, a suitable moisture barrier or moisture-barrier adhesive, and following the adhesive manufacturer's limits.

Older villas and bungalows are different: many sit on timber piles with suspended timber floors, often with original native timber boards that can be restored. Our [guide to timber flooring over a slab in NZ](https://timbo.com.au/guides/timber-flooring-over-slab-nz) covers testing, barriers and installation in detail.

## Native timbers vs European oak

**New Zealand's traditional wood floors are native timbers such as rimu and matai; today most new oak floors in NZ are European oak.** Both can look superb – the choice is about colour, availability and style.

| | Rimu | Matai | European oak |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Botanical type | NZ native softwood (podocarp), *Dacrydium cupressinum* | NZ native softwood (podocarp), *Prumnopitys taxifolia* | Hardwood, *Quercus robur* / *Q. petraea* |
| Colour | Red-brown to gold, with figure | Golden yellow to brown | Even honey to sand |
| Typical setting | Villas, bungalows, heritage homes | Villas and older homes | New builds, renovations, parquet |
| New supply | Limited; much is recycled | Limited; much is recycled | Readily available |
| Janka hardness | Not given in our sources | Not given in our sources | ~4.2–6.1 kN ([PFC](https://www.pfc.com.au/janka-rating-floor-durability/)) |
| Finishes | Usually clear, to show the colour | Usually clear | Natural, white-wash, stain, smoked |
| Patterns | Mostly straight boards | Mostly straight boards | Herringbone, chevron, pattern parquet |

Because native timber harvesting in New Zealand is tightly controlled, new rimu and matai flooring is scarce and often recycled from older buildings. That makes **restoring** existing native floors worthwhile – and makes European oak the practical choice for new floors and for herringbone or chevron patterns. ## Renovating a villa or bungalow

**In an older NZ home, start by checking what is already under the carpet – many villas and bungalows still have native timber floors that can be restored.** Sanding and finishing an original floor keeps the character of the house and usually costs less than a new floor.

If the existing floor is too damaged, or a new pattern such as herringbone is wanted, a few points apply:

- **Suspended floors move.** Timber floors on piles respond to ground moisture and ventilation, so check the subfloor space is dry and well ventilated before laying anything new.
- **Parquet needs a sheet subfloor.** Herringbone and chevron blocks are glued to a flat, continuous surface, so a structural sheet layer is usually laid over the old boards or joists first.
- **Heights and thresholds change.** A new layer raises the floor, which affects doors, thresholds, stairs and the junction with kitchens and bathrooms.
- **Consent may apply.** Structural changes to floors can need building consent – your builder or designer will advise.

A Timbo partner can assess the existing floor and advise whether to restore, overlay or replace.

## What wood flooring costs in New Zealand

**Prices in New Zealand are quoted in NZD and usually include 15% GST – always check.** Indicative 2026 figures:

| Item | NZD per m² (incl. 15% GST) | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Engineered oak flooring, supply | $99–$320+ | [Marchand](https://www.marchandonline.co.nz/post/engineered-oak-flooring-cost-nz-2026-price-guide), [Vienna Woods](https://www.viennawoods.co.nz/timber-flooring-cost-nz/) |
| Installation | $40–$150 | [Marchand](https://www.marchandonline.co.nz/post/engineered-oak-flooring-cost-nz-2026-price-guide), [Vienna Woods](https://www.viennawoods.co.nz/timber-flooring-cost-nz/) |

On top of supply and installation, budget for slab testing and preparation, moisture barrier and adhesive, removal of old floor coverings, and – for raw timber – sanding and finishing on site. Parquet patterns cost more to install than straight boards. Read the [oak flooring cost NZ guide](https://timbo.com.au/guides/oak-flooring-cost-nz) for a full breakdown. Timbo does not publish retail prices; your partner will quote.

## Imports, compliance and provenance

**Oak flooring is imported into New Zealand, so provenance and biosecurity matter.**

- **Biosecurity:** wood products imported into NZ must meet MPI import health standards ([MPI](https://www.mpi.govt.nz/import/forest-products/wood-products)).
- **Legal harvest:** New Zealand's legal-harvest assurance system for timber is being redesigned ([MPI](https://www.mpi.govt.nz/forestry/forest-industry-and-workforce/legal-harvest-assurance-system-for-timber/)).
- **Market size:** NZ imported about US$10.05 million of multilayer flooring panels in 2025, a flat result ([GTAIC](https://gtaic.ai/market-reports/multilayer-assembled-flooring-panels-market-new-zealand-outlook-in-2026)).

For what importers and specifiers need to check, see [NZ timber flooring imports and MPI](https://timbo.com.au/guides/nz-timber-flooring-import-mpi). For certificates relating to a specific Timbo batch, ask Timbo.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between wood flooring and timber flooring in NZ?

None – New Zealanders use wood flooring and timber flooring interchangeably for floors with a real timber surface. Australians more often say floorboards. Laminate and hybrid are timber-look products, not wood flooring.

### Can solid wood flooring go on a concrete slab in NZ?

Yes, if the slab is dry enough and flat. BRANZ guidance is a relative humidity of 75% or less at the slab surface, and new slabs can take months to reach that. See [timber flooring over a slab in NZ](https://timbo.com.au/guides/timber-flooring-over-slab-nz).

### Is European oak or rimu better for a New Zealand home?

It depends on the look and the house. Rimu is the heritage NZ floor with a rich red-brown colour, but new supply is limited; European oak is widely available, pale and even, and suits parquet patterns. Compare them in [oak vs rimu](https://timbo.com.au/compare/oak-vs-rimu).

### How much does oak flooring cost in New Zealand?

As a guide, engineered oak costs about NZD $99–$320+ per m² to supply including 15% GST, with installation around $40–$150 per m². See the [oak flooring cost NZ guide](https://timbo.com.au/guides/oak-flooring-cost-nz) for more detail.

### Does imported timber flooring need MPI clearance?

Wood products imported into New Zealand must meet MPI import health standards. Your supplier handles this for finished flooring; see [NZ timber flooring imports and MPI](https://timbo.com.au/guides/nz-timber-flooring-import-mpi).

### How do I buy Timbo flooring in New Zealand?

Through a Timbo partner. Timbo is appointing partners in New Zealand – email partnerships@timbo.com.au and we will connect you with the nearest one. NZ flooring businesses can [apply to become a partner](https://timbo.com.au/partners/new-zealand).

### Does Timbo ship to New Zealand?

Yes. Timbo supplies trade partners in New Zealand from its Melbourne warehouse, with freight quoted per order. Your partner will confirm delivery timing for your project.
