## Key facts

- Warm-white light (about 2700–3000K) brings out the honey tones of natural oak; cool light (4000K+) makes oak look greyer.
- Herringbone and chevron catch light differently on each block – a central chandelier highlights the pattern.
- Matt finishes reduce glare and reflections from downlights; gloss finishes show every light source.
- Timbo supplies both European oak floorboards and indoor and outdoor lighting to trade partners.

## Light changes how oak looks

**European oak** has a warm, honey-to-sand tone that shifts with the light. Under **warm-white light (about 2700–3000K)** the yellow and amber tones come forward; under **cool or daylight-white light (4000K and above)** the same floor reads greyer and flatter. For living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, warm white is the safe choice.

| Light | Effect on natural oak | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Warm white 2700–3000K | Warm, honey tones | Living, dining, bedrooms |
| Neutral white ~4000K | Cleaner, slightly cooler | Kitchens, laundries, work areas |
| Cool/daylight 5000K+ | Grey, flat | Garages, utility spaces |

## Pattern floors and a central light

Herringbone and chevron blocks sit at angles, so each block catches light differently. A **central chandelier** centred on the set-out line makes the zigzag shimmer as you walk through the room. Plan the chandelier position with the installer's centre line – see [herringbone layout and waste](https://timbo.com.au/guides/herringbone-layout-and-waste).

## Finish and glare

Gloss finishes mirror every downlight. **Matt** polyurethane or oil finishes give a softer, more natural look under strong lighting – see [oil vs polyurethane](https://timbo.com.au/guides/oil-vs-polyurethane-finish).

## Inside to outside

Use warm-white outdoor lanterns at the entry so the light colour matches the hallway inside. A pair of [outdoor wall lanterns](https://timbo.com.au/collections/outdoor-lighting) at the front door and a chandelier over an oak herringbone hallway make a consistent first impression.

## Frequently asked questions

### What colour light suits oak floors?

Warm white (about 2700–3000K) for living areas and bedrooms. Neutral white (about 4000K) can suit kitchens and work areas but makes natural oak read cooler.

### Do downlights make timber floors look shiny?

On gloss or semi-gloss finishes, yes – each downlight reflects as a hotspot. Matt polyurethane or oil finishes reduce this. See [oil vs polyurethane](https://timbo.com.au/guides/oil-vs-polyurethane-finish).

### Should the chandelier line up with the herringbone pattern?

Ideally the chandelier is centred on the same line the installer uses to set out the herringbone or chevron, so light and pattern share one axis. Plan both before the floor goes down.
