Comparison

European oak vs blackbutt flooring: hardness, colour, cost and which to choose

Blackbutt and European oak are both pale, popular flooring timbers – which is why people compare them. Blackbutt is harder and Australian-grown; oak is softer, more versatile with finishes and the go-to timber for herringbone and chevron.

Quick answer

Choose blackbutt if you want a hard, light-coloured Australian timber in straight boards, with a shorter supply chain. Choose European oak if you want a light floor with more finish options – white, natural, smoked, stained – or a herringbone or chevron pattern. Blackbutt wins on hardness; oak wins on design range and parquet formats.

Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis) is a hardwood from coastal New South Wales and south-east Queensland, pale golden to light brown in colour. European oak (Quercus robur and Q. petraea) is a European hardwood with a honey-to-straw colour and straight, even grain.

Look

Both are light, but the tones differ. Blackbutt reads golden and warm; European oak reads honey to neutral and can be pushed lighter or darker with finishes. Oak has a clear ray fleck and quiet, straight grain that suit pattern floors. Blackbutt's gum veins and pin holes add character, more so in feature grades. If you want an even, pale floor or an on-trend smoked or white finish, oak is easier to control – see oil vs polyurethane finishes.

Hardness and durability

Blackbutt is harder: about 9.1 kN on the Janka scale against 4.2–6.1 kN for European oak (PFC, Flooring Expert). In practice, blackbutt dents less under point loads like heels and chair legs. Neither timber is scratch-proof; scratches mostly happen in the finish, and both floors can be sanded and recoated. See the Janka hardness chart for what the numbers mean.

Stability

Both are reliable flooring timbers when supplied dry and acclimatised. Australian-made boards are typically supplied at 10–12% moisture content (ATFA), and flooring should be installed within about ±2% of its in-service moisture content (WoodSolutions). Imported oak must be acclimatised to local conditions before laying – see acclimatising oak flooring. Short parquet blocks spread seasonal movement across many joints, which helps on slabs.

Cost

Straight blackbutt and straight oak boards are in a similar band; oak parquet costs more to install.

Installation

Blackbutt strip flooring is commonly nailed over joists or battens or glued to slab and ply. Oak parquet is glued down to a flat, dry substrate. On slab, typical requirements are flatness within about 3mm over 3m and a moisture barrier or moisture-barrier adhesive, following the adhesive maker's limits (Bowens). For bushfire-prone sites, AS 3959 regulates elevated subfloors and flooring exposed to radiant heat rather than internal floors on slab (WoodSolutions) – see timber flooring in bushfire areas.

Maintenance

Maintenance is the same for both: sweep, damp-mop with a timber-safe cleaner, felt pads under furniture, mats at entries, and a recoat before the finish wears through. Oak's softer surface makes protective habits a little more important.

Sustainability and provenance

Blackbutt has the shorter supply chain; oak relies on import due diligence. Blackbutt is grown and milled in eastern Australia from native forests and plantations. European oak is imported, and Australian importers must run a due-diligence system under the Illegal Logging Prohibition Act (DAFF). Ask any supplier – Timbo included – for certificates and documentation relevant to your project.

Suitability by room and climate

Situation Better fit
Busy family areas, heavy furniture Blackbutt
Herringbone or chevron European oak
Pale, white or smoked finish European oak
Warm, golden Australian look Blackbutt
Raised floor over joists, straight boards Blackbutt (or oak boards)

Which should you choose?

  • Hardest light floor: blackbutt.
  • Pattern floor: European oak – compare herringbone vs chevron.
  • Specific colour or finish: European oak.
  • Local supply chain matters most: blackbutt.

Frequently asked questions

Is blackbutt harder than European oak?

Yes. Blackbutt rates about 9.1 kN on the Janka scale and European oak about 4.2–6.1 kN, so blackbutt resists dents better. Both need a good finish to resist scratches.

Do blackbutt and oak look similar?

From a distance, both read as light timber floors. Up close, blackbutt is more golden with occasional gum veins and pin holes; oak has a cooler honey tone with straight grain and visible ray fleck, especially in quarter-sawn pieces.

Which is better for a light, Scandi-style floor?

European oak is usually easier, because it takes white-wash, natural-look and pale oiled finishes evenly. Blackbutt can be finished pale, but its natural golden tone shows through and tends to amber with time.

Is blackbutt cheaper than oak?

In straight boards, blackbutt is often similar or cheaper. Solid Australian hardwood supply is commonly about $55–$130/m². Oak parquet costs more to install because pattern work takes more labour.

Can blackbutt be used in bushfire-prone areas?

Bushfire rules under AS 3959 mainly affect elevated subfloors and flooring exposed to radiant heat, not internal floors over a slab. Check species requirements with your builder or certifier for any elevated floor.
