Why designers choose chevron
Chevron flooring was laid in French châteaux and Parisian apartments long before it reached Australian homes, which is why it's often called French herringbone. The V-shape gives a strong sense of direction, so it's ideal for:
- leading the eye down a hallway or towards a view;
- making a narrow room feel longer;
- adding a tailored look to boutique retail, restaurants and offices.
Because every joint lines up along a single centre line, chevron rewards precise installation. Timbo partners include experienced parquet installers – find one near you, or read the chevron flooring guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is chevron more expensive than herringbone?
Chevron blocks need angled machining and the floor needs precise set-out, so supply and labour can be a little higher than herringbone. Ask a Timbo partner for a quote on your floor plan.
Which is more modern, chevron or herringbone?
Chevron tends to read as more contemporary and directional; herringbone feels more classic. Both suit modern interiors in natural oak. See herringbone vs chevron.
Can chevron go over underfloor heating?
Solid oak over underfloor heating needs care – floor surface temperatures are usually limited (commonly to about 27°C) and installation conditions must be controlled. Read oak flooring and underfloor heating and talk to Timbo before specifying.
