Chandelier buying guide: size, hanging height and bulbs

How to choose a chandelier – sizing to the room and table, hanging height, number of lights, E14 bulbs and colour temperature – with Timbo's C-series and D-series chandeliers.

Updated Markdown version

1. Size the chandelier to the room

A simple rule: add the room's length and width in metres, then multiply by about 8–10 to get a chandelier diameter in centimetres.

Room Length + width Suggested diameter Timbo option
Entry 2.5 × 3m 5.5m 44–55cm C03 (D44cm), D9289-8 (D46cm)
Bedroom 3.5 × 4m 7.5m 60–75cm C06 (D64cm), D9174-6 (D69cm)
Living 4 × 5m 9m 72–90cm C08 (D81cm)
Large living 5 × 6m 11m 88–110cm C10 (D100cm)

Timbo's product information also gives suggested room areas: C03 about 5–8 m², C06 about 9–16 m², C10 about 26–31 m².

2. Over a dining table

Choose a chandelier roughly half to two-thirds the width of the table, and hang it so the bottom sits about 75–90cm above the tabletop. Long tables can take two smaller chandeliers.

3. Hanging height and ceilings

Typical Australian and New Zealand ceilings are about 2.4–2.7m. In walkways keep the bottom of the fitting at least about 2.1m above the floor. Taller models such as the D9195-3 Elegant Glow (H71cm) suit higher ceilings and stairwells.

4. Bulbs and colour temperature

Timbo chandeliers use E14 (small Edison screw) holders. Warm-white LED candle bulbs (about 2700–3000K) give a classic glow and flatter timber floors. Dimmable LEDs need a compatible dimmer – ask your electrician.

5. Installation

Chandeliers must be installed by a licensed electrician, who will check the ceiling fixing can carry the weight – larger wrought-iron models need a secure mount.

Frequently asked questions

What size chandelier do I need for my living room?

Add the room's length and width in metres and multiply by about 8–10 to get a diameter in centimetres. A 4 × 5m room suggests roughly 72–90cm – for example the C08 (D81cm). Timbo's product pages also list suggested room areas, e.g. C06 for 9–16 m² and C10 for 26–31 m².

How high should a chandelier hang over a dining table?

About 75–90cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the chandelier is a common guide. Higher ceilings can take the upper end.

How many lights should a chandelier have?

More arms give more light and a grander look. As a guide, 3 lights suit small rooms and entries, 6 lights mid-sized living and dining rooms, and 8–10 lights large or double-height spaces.

What bulbs go in an E14 chandelier?

E14 is the small Edison screw base. LED candle bulbs in warm white (about 2700–3000K) give a classic glow; check the maximum wattage on the fitting.
